33 Western Wainwrights

1 Great Gable 899m

Great Gable is the highest fell of the western wainwrights and the 7th highest in all the 214 wainwrights. Great Gable is located at the head of Wasdale with Scafell Pike to the south and Kirk Fell to the north. Great Gable is one of the most popular fells in the Lake District.
2 Pillar 892m

Pillar is the 2nd highest mountain of the western fells and the 8th highest of all the wainwrights. Pillar is located between the valleys of Ennerdale to the north and Wasdale to the south. Pillar is the highest fell within the Piller range of mountains in the Lake District.


3 Scoat Fell 841m

Scoat Fell is the 3rd highest of the western fells and the 22nd highest of all the wainwrights. Scoat Fell is located at the head of the Mosdale horseshoe. Scoot fell has paths connecting to 4 other wainwrights, to the east Haycock, the west Pillar, the south Red Pike and lastly the closest wainwright to the north, Steeple.
4 Red Pike (Wasdale) 826m

Red Pike is the 4th highest of all the western fells and the 26th highest of all the wainwrights. Red Pike is located at the north of Wast Water behind Yewbarrow. Red Pike is part of the the Mosedale horseshoe and connects onto Yewbarrow and Scoat Fell, It is the highest fell of the two wainwrights named Red Pike.


5 Steeple 819m

Steeple is the 5th highest fell out of the 33 western fells and the 28th highest of all the wainwrights. Steeple is located within the Pillar range of fells inbetween Wasdale and Ennerdale Valley. Steeple is just north of scoat fell, these two wainwrights are the closest wainwrights to one another. Steeple has an impressive rocky crag which overlooks Ennerdale.
6 High Stile 806m

High Stile is the 6th highest peak in the western fells and the 30th highest peak in all the wainwrights. High Stile towers over the southern shore of Buttermere lake, High Stile is the highest of the three peaks located directly above the south of Buttermere.


7 Kirk Fell 802m

Kirk Fell is the 7th highest of the western fells and the 34th highest of all the wainwrights. Kirk fell is located right beside Great Gable to the north, Kirk fell is part of the Pillar range, it can be hiked on it its own from Wasdale via its steep straight ridge.
8 Green Gable 801m

Green Gable is the 8th highest of the western fells and the 35th highest of all the wainwrights. Green Gable is located just to the east of Great Gable, both fells are connected via windy gap. Green Gable and Great Gable are normally done on the same walk.


9 Haycock 797m

Haycock is the 9th highest mountain of the western wainwrights and the 36th highest of all the wainwrights. Haycock is located next to Scoat fell to the west, Haycock lies between the valleys of Wasdale and Ennerdale, it is a remote fell and can be walked from either valley
10 Red Pike (Buttermere) 739m

Red Pike (Buttermere) is the 10th highest of the western fell and the 62nd highest of all the wainwrights. Red Pike Buttermere is the smaller of the two Red Pike wainwrights, it is located above the south of Buttermere along with High Stile and High Crag to the east. These three peaks tower above the southern shore of Buttermere lake.


11 High Crag 744m

High Crag is the 11th highest of the western fells and the 65th highest of all the wainwrights. High Crag stands above the southern shore of Buttermere and is the smallest of the three peaks above Buttermere to the south. High Crag is the the most eastern of these two fells, High Stile and Red Pike.
12 Brandreth 715m

Brandreth is the 12th highest fell in the western wainwrights and 79th highest of all the wainwrights. Brandreth is a fairly secluded fell located behind Haystacks to the east and next to Great Gable to the north. Although located between these two fells it is usually completed along with haystacks and surrounding fells.


13 Caw Fell 697m

Caw Fell is the 13th highest of the western fells and the 91st highest of all the 214 wainwrights. Caw Fell is located in between Haycock and Lank Rigg. Caw Fell i an secluded fell and quite a difficuly fell to access. It can be done with the Lank Rigg group or with Haycock but is usually done as an add on, out and back route.
14 Grey Knotts 697m

Grey Knotts is the 14th highest of the western fell and the 92nd highest of the wainwrights. Grey Knotts is located to the north of Brandreth and just behind Fleetwidth Pike. Grey Knotts towers over the Honister pass which is located just north of the fell.


15 Seatallan 692m

Seatallan is the 15th highest of the western fells and the 94th highest of all the wainwrights. Seatallan is located above wast water to the north, it is nessled inbetween the fells of Middle Fell and Buckbarrow to the south and then Haycock to the north. The summited area of Seatallan is a vast grassy dome.
16 Fleetwith Pike 649m

Fleetwith Pike is the 16th highest of the western fells and the 116th highest of all 214 of the wainwrights. Fleetwith Pike os located at the head of Buttmere to the east, It has an iconic pointed peak seen from Butteremere. Fleetwith and Haystacks both form the Buttemere skyline to the east, Fleetwith being towering over the Honister pass to the south.


17 Base Brown 646m

Base Brown is the 17th highest of the western fells and 117th highest of the wainwrights. Base brown is located at the head of Borrowdale, it forms a wide ridge that connects onto Green Gable and Great Gable, These three wainwrights are usually summited in the same walk when completing the wainwrights.
18 Starling Dodd 633m

Starling Dodd is the 18th highest of the western fells and the 121st highest of all the wainwrights. Starling Dodd is situated in between the Butteremere valley to the north and the Ennerdale valley to the south. This peak lies between Red Pike and Great Borne. Starling Dodd is secluded and not often summited.


19 Yewbarrow 627m

Yewbarrow is the 19th highest fell in the western wainwrights and is the 123rd highest of all the wainwrights. Yewbarrow is located immediately above the northern edge of Wast water, Yewbarrow is normally summited from its gradual western side and not its incredibly steep north route. Yewbarrow is part of the Mosedale horsehsoe and connects onto Red Pike.
20 Great Borne 616m

Great Borne is the 20th highest of fell of the western wainwrights and the 126th highest of all the wainwrights. Great Borne is situated in between the Buttermere and Ennerdale valleys, Buttermere to the north and Ennerdale to the south. To the east of Great Borne is Starling Dodd and two the west is a steep decent that leads down to other smaller wainwrights.


21 Haystacks 597m

Haystacks is the 21st highest peak of the western fells and the 131st of all the wainwrights. Haystacks is located at the head of Buttermere and forms the eastern skyline of Buttermere along with Fleetwith Pike. Haystacks was alfred wainwrights favourite peak of them all.
22 Middle Fell 582m

Middle Fell is the 22nd highest peak of the western wainwrights and the 135th highest of all the wainwrights. Middle fell is located above the northern shores of Wast water. Middle fell connects on to the large grassy domed summit of Seatallan to the north and is adjacent to Buckbarrow to the west.


23 Blake Fell 573m

Blake Fell is the 23rd highest of the western fells and the 140th highest of all the 214 wainwrights. Blake Fell is located within the loweswater fells, it is the highest of all the wainwrights surrounding Loweswater. Blake Fell can be climbed for Loweswater.
24 Lank Rigg 541m

Lank Rigg is the 24th highest of the western fells and the 153rd highest of all the wainwrights. Lank Rigg is situated to the south of Ennerdale valley. Lank Rigg is the highest of the two other surrounding fells within the Lank Rigg group, consisting of Grike and Crag Fell.


25 Gavel Fell 526m

Gavel Fell is the 25th highest of the western fells and the 158th highest of all the wainwrights. Gavel Fell is located within the Loweswater group of fells, it is the second highest in this area and is situated most central. Gavel Fell connects onto Hen Comb and Blake Fell.
26 Crag Fell 523m

Crag Fell is the 26th highest of the western fells and the 162nd highest of all the wainwrights. Crag Fell is part of the Lank Rigg group located just south of Ennerdale valley. Crag hill is situated in betwen the two other fells in the Lank Rigg Group, Grike and Lank Rigg and is the second highest of the three.


27 Mellbreak 512m

Mellbreak is the 27th highest of all the western fells and the 168th highest of all the wainwrights. Mellbreak is surrounded by higher fells and central to quite a few different areas. Mellbreak is an isolated peak with loweswater to the west, Buttermere to the east, Ennerdale to the south and the Grasmoor peaks to the north, Mellbreak does not belong to one particular area and is surrouned underneath by marshland.
28 Hen Comb 509m

Hen Comb is the 28th highest wainwright of the western fells and the 171st highest of all the wainwrights. Hen Comb is located within the Loweswater fells to the south of Loweswater. Hen Comb is situated inbetween Gavel Fell and Greta Borne both of which are higher than Hen Comb.


29 Grike 488m

Grike is the 29th highest of the western fells and the overall 177th highest of the wainwrights. Grike is located just south of Ennerdale and is the smallest of the 3 fells within the Lank Rigg group. Grike is the most western of all the Lake District wainwrights.
30 Burnbank Fell 475m

Burnbank Fell is the 30th highest of the western fells and the 183rd highest of all the wainwrights. Burnbank Fell is located within the loweswater fells to the south of Loweswater, it is the most western of the Loweswater fells and usually the first or last wainwright summited when doing a group of wainwrights in this area.


31 Buckbarrow 423m

Buckbarrow is the 31st highest of all the western fells and the 196th highest of all the wainwrights. Buckbarrow is located abpve the northern shore of wast water to the western edge of the lake. Buckbarrow connnects onto Hayhock and is adjascnet to Middel Fell located to the east.
32 Low Fell 423m

Low Fell is the second smallest of the western fells and the 197th highest of the 214 wainwrights. Low Fell is located above the northern side of Loweswater, Low Fell is pair with one other fell in this immediate area,the smallest western wainwright Fellbarrow located to the north of Low Fell.


33 Fellbarrow 416m

Fellbarrow is the smallest of the western fells and the 199th highest of the 214 wainwrights. Fellbarrow is located to the north of Loweswater and Low Fell, the only other wainwright in this immediate area. Fellbarrow is the most northern of the western fells.
