Kijevo

Kijevo is located just south of Croatias highest mountain Dinara. Kijevo has many different accommodation options in which you can stay before attempting to make it to the summit of Dinara.

Hiking Dinara

There are 3 main routes up to the summit of Dinara, all of which start on the south side of the mountain within Croatia

1 - From Glavas (Easy)

2 - From Layby near Kijevo (Easy)

3 - From Knin (Medium)

1. From Glavas to Dinara

This route from Glavas is possibly the most popular route up to the summit of Dinara. The ascent in Glavaš begins at a small, concrete house with a route marking.

 

The trail ascends through open terrain and past the medieval fortification also called Glavaš, after 2.5km  the trail reaches a fork, take the path to the left heading towards Osljak. 

​

After following the path past Osljak there will be a mountain shelter called Planinarsko Skloniste Drago Grubac, you can rest here before carrying on the journey.

​

From this mountain hut it is a further 2.5km and 180m ascent to the summit of Dinara. Please not there are a lot of paths that head up to the summit of Dinara from Glavas you can take which ever one to reach the summit as long as you have some for of navigation to not get lost. 

​

Once at the top of Dinara you can head back via the path you came up or any other path that leads back to Glavas.

2. From Kijevo

This route starts in a layby just outside of Kijevo, This particular route is more direct to the summit of Dinara however the route is less clear and a bit of a scramble in places. The trail follows a track through some old abandoned villages and along the same path for 7km. 

 

The path then changes and gets a lot steeper and is more of a scramble from this point. This section of the route ascends 690m and is a total distance of 3.5km. 

​

You will meet a fork near the end of this section 1500m high, take the right path as a short cut towards the summit along this small section you will pass the Planinarsko Skloniste Zlatko Prgin Mountain Hut.

​

Once at the mountain hut it is a further 1km to the summit and 260m ascent. Once at the summit of Dinara you can head back following the same route up.

3. From Knin

This route up to the summit of Dinara from Knin is a long route ideally done over two days. There are two mountains huts in which you can stay in. (Camping is generally frowned upon). 

​

The route begins on a small path heading towards Dinara before changing to a bigger track after around 2km. Once reaching this bigger track you will contiune in the same direction for 5.8km until reaching a fork at an altitude of 850m. In this section the trail path changes quite often from a wide track to a smaller path and back a few time, keep an eye on navigation on this section as it is easy to take the wrong path. All paths lead the same way but some will take longer.

​

Once at the fork around 850m take the left path to go around the summit of Badanj instead of over the top. You will once again be greeted by a wider track, turn right and head towards Dinara follow the wide track for 3.2km. In this section you will come across the first mountain hut Brezovac.

​

After 3.2km take the smaller path right towards Dinara, from here you will reach the summit in 2km. You will pass the second mountain hut Planinarsko Skloniste Zlatko Prgin. To return to the start simply retrace your footsteps.
