Climbing Coma Pedrosa

Climbing to the top of Coma Pedrosa, the highest peak in the small country of Andorra, is an exhilarating adventure for outdoor enthusiasts. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making the ascent a rewarding experience on this non technical climb. As you navigate the rocky paths, be prepared for a mix of challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery. Reaching the summit provides a sense of accomplishment and a perfect opportunity to take in the panoramic vistas, from one of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees.

There are 2 main routes up to the summit of Coma Pedrosa, These routes both start from the village of Arinsal and slightly vary in length and total ascent.

1.  Via Refugi de Comapedrosa (Medium)

2. Via Pla de I'Estany (Medium)

1. Via Refugi de Comapedrosa

The Route up to the summit of Coma Pedrosa via the Refugi de Comapedrosa is the more popular route of the two, It is slightly longer and has more ascent than the latter. There is a car park near by the start of this route that begins taking you through a small patch of woodlands before reaching a large track after 10 minutes of walking.  There is only a small section of track which lasts 0.5km before your back onto a smaller woodland trail.

Follow the woodland trail for another 0.5km before crossing a bridge above some rapid. this small section does not have much of an incline, however once you have crossed the bridge the path gets steep as it zig zags up the mountain. there is a small section when the gradient decrease however it steepen once again until you reach the mountain hut. this section from the bridge to the hut is around 2km with 450m of ascent. 

Once at the Hut the trail plateau's for a while as you walk underneath and passed the summit of the mountain.  You will be walking on fairly flat ground for about 1km before the tail steepens again. Keep following the track, as you gain a bit of height the track then zig zags back in the direction of the summit you will follow this bit until you reach Estany Negre (Lake) situated 250m underneath the summit. From the Hut to the base of this lake it is 2.5km with another 420m of ascent. 

Once here at the lake you can choose to turn right up a scrambly route to the summit or continue passed the lake and follow the normal way the last 250m ascent to the summit. (Please note the route up scrambly section is just before the lake and is unclear.

Once going either of the steep ways to the summit of Coma Pedrosa to head back you go back the way you came.

2. Via Pla de I'Estany

The route to the summit of Coma Pedrosa Via pla de I'Estany is the shorter and less popular route to the summit. Both routes start at the exact location and head up the same woodland trail which joins onto the much wider track. Follow the same path as above for 1km until you reach a point where a woodland forms. Unlike the path above keep following the track which goes in the opposite direction and zigzags up the mountain for another 0.5km. 

The track ends and follow this new trail which goes up the right hand side of Coma Pedrosa, You will follow this new path for 1.35km and 210m meters of ascent on steady gradient until you reach Pla de I'Estany. 

From the lake The path steepens a lot, this path stays very steep nearly all the way to the summit from here to when you get to the wide ridge just below the summit it is 2.25km with 780m of ascent.  Once at the T junction inbetween Coma Pedrosa and Port de Baiau it is only 0.3km and 70m to the summit of Coma Pedrosa.

To head back to the satrt you can head down the way you came of take the easier route down via the Refugi de ComaPedrosa.
