There are 3 main routes up to the summit of Musala, Bulgarias highest mountain. These routes all vary in length, total ascent and difficultly. 

​

1. The Normal Route (Hard)

2. Via Ski lift (Medium)

3. Ridge Route  Via Little Musala (Very Hard)

1. Musala Normal Route

The normal route up Musala is a long 22.5km walk with 1470m of elevation. The route starts in Boroverts and heads through a woodland valley, the begining of this walk is fairly steep. After 4.5km and 560m of ascent you will come out of the woodland and be greeted by the impressive surrounding mountains. The start of this path is easy to navigate.

Once out of the woodland it is quite a long walk to the abandoned mountain hut, the route in this section is straightforward however path can be un clear in some parts, this part is fairly flat until reaching the hut. This section goes on for 3.35km with 400m of ascent.  At the mountain hut you will join paths with people who caught the ski lift up.

Once at the mountain hut the path steepens again straight away, follow the lake around to the right and follow the zig zag path up to the mountain. it will be another 2.7km and 320m of ascent before reaching the final mountain hut.

From here it is a very steep last 170m of ascent, there are tremendous views on this busy route, take care on this section as there is lots of loose scree, after 1 hour you should have reached the busy summit. To get back down you can follow the way you came or take a shorter route and get the ski lift into Boroverts.

2. Musala via Ski Lift

This route up to the to of Musala is the shortest and easiest route. This route starts at 2369m the total distance is 14km with 632m of ascent.  The route starts from the top of the ski lift and descends on a clear bath for 3.6km.

Once at the mountain hut the path steepens straight away, follow the lake around to the right and follow the zig zag path up to the mountain. it will be another 2.7km and 320m of ascent before reaching the final mountain hut.

From here it is a very steep last 170m of ascent, there are tremendous views on this busy route, take care on this section as there is lots of loose scree, after 1 hour you should have reached the busy summit. To get back down follow the same path back to the ski lift.

3. Ridge Route (Via Little Musala)

This route is the most challenging route to get the the summit of Musala, you can either start from the skit lift or from Borovets.  Once starting on either route make your way to the abandoned hut.  From here follow the path around the left of the lake and head up the steep path to the T junction along the ridge line. This is a 1.8km walk with 290m ascent from the hut. Once at the junction turn right.

From here head along the ridge line for 1km reaching the first summit, once at this summit continue to follow along this ridge for another 0.6km until reaching the summit of Little Musala. 

​

From little Musala to Musala it is only 0.6km however the scramble is very tricky so take your time and be safe along this last section to the summit of Musala. To head down from the summit it is best to take the normal route back down to the abandoned mountain hut and to your start point.
